May 10, 2014: Farol Tomson and John Von Ashen swam
outstanding times at Short Course Nationals in Santa Clara.
Both swimmers dropped significant time in their events. GERM
finished tied for 187th out of all the clubs scoring points.
Former GERM swimmer Brian Sepanik also participated for
From Farol Thompson:
This was my 8th USMS Short Course Nationals and my third
time swimming at the Santa Clara facility. I swam 6
events and made best times for the year in the 50 free, 50
fly and 100 fly including overall best times in 200 and
400 IM and 200 fly. I placed 9th in the 400 IM and scored
2 points for Germantown Masters. The weather was warm
the first day but on Saturday and Sunday the wind picked
up and sitting in the shade was chilly. The water
temperature was cool but still warmer than the pool
temperature at GISC for the last month.
This was John's first nationals meet. Having only learned
how to swim for the first time in August 2013, he has swam
in 5 meets before Nationals and got best times on both the
50 free and 50 back at nationals. John's favorite stroke is
the back stroke though he looks forward to learning fly and
breast. When asked what he liked most and least about
swimming at nationals he said, "swimming with some of the
fastest people in the nation was really cool but a little
intimidating especially when I found out that heats were
divided by age and not by times. Everyone was very
encouraging though. I'm proud to be a part of something
where all levels of experience are welcome."
